Yet as everyone in the industry knows at this point, the performance of your mobile site is becoming more and more important every day. While most eCommerce customers still use the desktop versions of sites, the usage of mobile devices is growing, thus necessitating the need to keep your mobile site up and running as fast as possible.

So now that you’ve gone through your desktop checklist, here are five steps for maximizing your performance on mobile.

Ο Reduce or Eliminate Third Party Presence

Third party performance impacts mobile site speed more than desktop websites. Only host business-critical third parties on your mobile site.

Ο Decrease Number of Bytes

Reducing page size is extremely important on a network with high latency and packet loss – the easiest place to start is by trimming down images. Use JPEGmini or TinyPNG to accomplish this. And don’t forget about minimizing CSS and JS, and definitely make sure you do not use a large JS library meant for desktop.

Ο Decrease Number of Requests

Remember Gzip and Keep Alives! TCP is not optimized for mobile, so closing connections very expensive on a network with high latency and packet loss. Send as much data as possible per connection.

Ο Limit Domain Sharding

Some desktop WPO techniques do not translate perfectly to mobile; domain sharding is one of these. You can use two shards, particularly if you have a responsive site, but avoid using more than that. They are expensive on mobile platforms, and usually become counter-productive after two shards.

Ο Easy Switch to Desktop Version

Many users on mobile devices connected to WiFi prefer to brows desktop versions of the website. Make sure this option is easy to spot and make that switch.
